Sabah Climate Chronicles & Ground-Truthing connects climate science with community knowledge and lived experience. Through collaboration with Indigenous communities, researchers, artists and communication practitioners, the project explores how climate change is experienced on the ground. It translates scientific projections into accessible stories, tools and insights that support locally grounded climate resilience.
Over the past year, Sabah Climate Chronicles & Ground-Truthing (CC & GT) has entered an important implementation phase,transforming months of research, partnership building and community engagement into tangible public-facing outcomes. The project continues to demonstrate how scientific climate knowledge can be made more meaningful through collaboration with Indigenous communities, artists, researchers and communication practitioners. As climate change increasingly affects Sabah through rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and greater uncertainty around waterand food systems, the project seeks to ensure that adaptation planning isinformed not only by scientific projections but also by the lived experiencesof the communities already responding to these changes.
Progress has also been made in strengthening the Sabah Climate Futures (SCF)website. Community stories are being integrated with scientific climate projections and interactive visualisations to create a more holistic understanding of future climate risks in Sabah. By presenting scientific information alongside lived experience, the platform enables users—including policymakers, educators, researchers and members of the public—to better understand how projected climate changes relate to real communities andeveryday livelihoods. This integration demonstrates the project's commitment tomaking climate information more inclusive and accessible for diverse audiences. By connecting scientific evidence with personal experiences, CC & GT seeksto encourage broader public participation in climate conversations while strengthening awareness of locally relevant adaptation strategies.
Communication and outreach activities have likewise expanded considerably. Working alongside communication partners such as Vibe Check, Sabah Climate Futures has refined its storytelling strategy to place stronger emphasis on human-centred narratives that connect audiences emotionally with climate issues. Rather than focusing exclusively on scientific outputs, communication materials would also highlight community voices, collaborative processes and examples of local resilience. With aims to build long-term storytelling capacity within participating communities, participants involved in the community storytelling and filmmaking would gain practical skills invisual storytelling, interviewing, filming and editing while developing confidence to document future community initiatives independently.
Through the partnership collaboration with Ecosystem2 (E2), Forever Sabah has strengthened the long-term sustainability of Sabah Climate Futures by advancing digital knowledge-sharing, supporting cross-sector collaboration, and creating opportunities to test new approaches to community-led climate communication. The partnership has enabled the project to scale beyond individual storytelling activities, connecting local narratives with regional innovation networks and demonstrating how Indigenous knowledge, participatory media and digital technologies can collectively support more inclusive climate adaptation planning.
Additionally, Forever Sabah is developing the Sabah Climate Change Risk Screening App to bring this information closer to the people making decisions about Sabah’s future. The prototype allows users to explore how hazards such as extreme heat, heavy rainfall, drought and fire may change across different places and future climate scenarios. By turning climate projections into accessible maps and summaries, the app aims to help planners, communities and organisations see where risks may be growing—and begin thinking about what can be done today.
Reinforcing the importance of cross-sector collaboration throughout implementation, CC & GT continues to bring together community organisations, Indigenous knowledge holders, artists, researchers,communication specialists and technical experts to co-create knowledge rather than working within traditional disciplinary boundaries. Such partnerships also provide opportunities for shared learning, helping different sectors understand the value of combining scientific expertise with traditional ecological knowledge.
As climate risks continue to evolve across Sabah, the need for locally grounded climate knowledge becomes increasingly important. CC > demonstrates that effective climate communication extends beyond presenting scientific evidence alone; it requires meaningful collaboration with the communities experiencing these changes firsthand. By bringing together climate science, Indigenous knowledge, arts and technology, the initiative helps tobuild a more inclusive understanding of climate resilience while contributing to informed decision-making and stronger adaptive capacity for Sabah's future.
